heart on your sleeve
join new york–based costume designer and performance artist curious orange for a four-day workshop focused on creating costume-based performances. in this workshop, we will repurpose lost-and-found garments and discarded items to design unique, personal looks. we will explore ways to express individuality through clothing. the focus will be on crafting distinctive costumes and using your body to enhance their performative quality. throughout the workshop, we will source materials, design and create our outfits, and collaborate to develop an absurdist, eclectic, and sustainable performance to present at the end. this workshop is part dance improvisation, part costume lab. in the improvisation component, we will explore our relationship to clothing and dressing up, as well as work with emphasis and restriction. it is a space to explore personal dress codes and to question the impossibility of industry standards. we will ignore those standards and create our own rules, or have no rules at all. in the costume lab, we will investigate our sourced materials (please bring your own materials—discarded clothing, odds and ends, paper, plastic, anything that inspires you), look for ways to wear them on the body, and explore how they make us move—whether enhancing, restricting, emphasising, hiding, extending, or combining all of the above. no sewing experience required; we will mostly use alternative ways of constructing garments (hand sew, tape, glue, knot, fold, cut, repeat!).
the description reflects an artist’s idea which was developed at the time it was submitted to b12. it may have changed by the time the workshop or the performance project is starting. please stay flexible. thank you!
biography
curious orange is a costume designer, performing artist, and director, working in the performing arts professionally for more than 25 years. drawing from their background in theatre and dance, c continues to work on creating alternative sustainable fashion shows in the form of dance, music, and spoken word performances. they have created such performances in nyc at dixon place and judson church for movement research, in brussels at tic tac art centre, and at la encartada moda in bilbao, spain. she has created dance costumes for the trisha brown dance company, david zambrano, yoshiko chuma, kathy westwater, and many others. her vibrant costumes are designed to evoke joy while highlighting her deep respect for the power of the body in motion. c is always looking for new, playful, fun, and sustainable ways to help express, empower, and provoke. manipulating fabrics, incorporating existing shapes, deconstructing classic garment structures, and rebuilding them into something new is part of that game. c’s garments have no gender assignment and are custom made for all sizes, seasons, and occasions. c is currently teaching workshops focused on fashion as performance. she teaches these workshops in new york at movement research, in brussels at tic tac art centre and p.a.r.t.s., and in berlin at b12 and tanzfabrik. they were a 2025 artist in residence at lmcc on governors island, new york city.
please be aware of our early bird special offer for this workshop! you can apply for this offer up until the 24th of march 2025. after the 24th the regular workshop fee applies. applications are accepted up until one day before the workshops starts.
