Body the mind

with one hand to explore, with the other to grasp. this workshop invites participants to explore the thinking, perceiving and imagining body. we cultivate an attention that moves in two directions at once — one mode reaching outward in inquiry, the other gathering and shaping what emerges. we shift between experiencing the body as subject — the living, attuned self — and attending to it as object, with its form, structure, dynamics and visible traces of movement. movement is generated from ideas, words and images, allowing thought and physicality to unfold as a single process. a short set material may be introduced as a case study for variation and further investigation. this approach views the body not only as material but also as a space where ideas emerge, transform and become tangible through movement. as we refine how we perceive form, intention and expression, we ask what remains unnoticed and what becomes visible when attention shifts. shared tasks nurture individual creativity and group exchange, opening pathways toward multilayered, expressive physicality. for dancers and dance-makers, this work broadens the tools for creating, reading and shaping movement with nuance, clarity and intention. if dance can reveal even a small truth about our potential for relating to the world, what should we attend to — and how — when we practise dance?

the description reflects an artist’s idea which was developed at the time it was submitted to b12. it may have changed by the time the workshop or the performance project is starting. please stay flexible. thank you!

biography

since embarking on his dance journey, michael getman has remained on an ongoing path of exploration, continually evolving his creative work and expanding his choreographic vocabulary. his artistic inquiry is driven by a desire to trace the essence of things and to celebrate the poetic transgression between different domains, responding to the ever-changing demands of experience through a wide range of physical and emotional expressions. he is regularly commissioned to create and share artistic works utilising diverse choreographic approaches, and his creations have been presented at festivals and venues in israel and abroad. michael also engages in theatre and ethnographic projects, researching and facilitating artistic expression with various communities, individuals and cultures. his dancing career began with the batsheva dance company, led by ohad naharin, and with amanda k. miller at pretty ugly ballet freiburg. michael holds a master of arts (m.a.) from the school of arts & humanities at the university of huddersfield, england. his thesis explored the use of words, ideas and gestures in contemporary choreography, drawing a comparative study with the dutch philosopher baruch de spinoza’s geometric method of inquiry. he regularly teaches seminars and workshops for professional dancers and in b.a. and m.a. programs.

creation unravels human experience. it exists everywhere and nowhere at once. i create to understand my relationship to desire, to mend something in the present tense. the creative state is instinctive and intuitive — elusive yet necessary. i explore what creation is and question the limits of my knowledge of it. to dance is to journey and arrive simultaneously. practice is continuous work that lets thought and sensation move through the body until everything can be forgotten. movement possibilities — physical, textual or vocal — are embodied over time and worn down to traces of feeling. with one hand exploring and the other grasping, i search for the specificity of a moment and the conditions that allow it to appear. choreography is the lens through which i assemble elements into moments of intensity. it is a process of arranging, questioning, intervening and imagining the space between what is and what could be. it involves order, chaos and persistence. bodies are unique landscapes holding intellectual, emotional, poetic and social ideas. they contain endless potential for becoming. i am interested in change and consistency, mind–body relations, attention, contradiction and multilayered expression. i prefer the experience rather than the illustrative. i am curious about people and their inherent ability to transcend. i ask to reach one person's eye and soul. i know it wishes to appear as one thing.
